18.16. Safety cushion (SRS)

GENERAL INFORMATION

1–safety cushion module;
2–spiral spring;
3–safety cushion knot;
4–control lamp of a safety cushion.

For achievement of maximum efficiency of work of SRS (additional system of safety) on the basis of a safety cushion it is necessary to adjust correctly sitting and a steering wheel, and also to put on a seat belt. In case of collision the sensor registers the shock loading exceeding a preset value, and turns on generators, which fill safety cushions to protect the driver and the passenger.

The safety cushion is filled at strong front blow. The safety cushion is arranged so that it lets out gas at once after is filled not to block the review. The safety cushion does not work at side-winders or behind, and also when capsizing car.

Malfunction in system can be found by means of a control lamp of a safety cushion.

In good repair the lamp joins at inclusion of ignition and is switched off through 6–8 pages. In case of malfunction the lamp starts to flicker or remains included.

System operation

Type of collision of the car: front blow or blow at an angle no more than 30 ° at bigger, than it is specified below, speeds.

Speed of the car at collision: depends on rigidity of object to which there is a collision. If the object rigid (is not deformed), the system works at the speed exceeding 25 km/h, at strictly head-on collision.

Collision with rigid object for speed of 25 km/h corresponds to collision with other car for speed of 50 km/h.

Conditions at which the system does not work:

– lateral blow;
– blow behind;
– capsizing;
– blow about a border;
– blow from the bottom when driving with a high speed on the rough road;
– collision when the key is not in the ignition lock (does not move a food).

System components

The structure of system includes the safety cushion module, the control unit, a control lamp, conducting and knot of a spiral spring.

Safety cushion control unit

The control unit of a safety cushion works at a measurement basis in one point. Its structure includes the sensor of acceleration and the safety sensor. The block registers an impulse of shock loading and includes a safety cushion. Components:

– CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT and memory;
– additional power supply;
– sensor of acceleration and safety sensor.

The safety cushion works, when both the acceleration sensor, and the safety sensor register an impulse of shock loading, sufficient for inclusion. The additional power supply is provided in case at collision of a wire will be torn off from the battery. The system carries out self-testing of electric components and sockets by means of the CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT. At emergence of malfunction the control lamp of a safety cushion joins, and the code of malfunction registers in internal memory. For reading of contents of memory it is necessary to use the external module of diagnostics. Necessary functions for interaction with such modules of diagnostics are provided with the control unit.

The safety cushion can work only if the key is in the situation "VKL" (ON) or "AKKUMULYATOR" (ASS). For service of system it is necessary to establish a key in situation "is LOCKED" (LOCK) or to take out it from the ignition lock, to disconnect a wire from the negative plug of the battery and to wait not less than 1 minute. It is necessary to tighten carefully fastening bolts till the specified moment that the control unit or its bracket did not move, for example, at failure. The moment of an inhaling should be not less than 8 N of m.

Control lamp of a safety cushion

The control lamp of a safety cushion joins at key turn from the situation "ACCUMULATOR" in the situation "VKL" on 6–8 villages. At this time self-testing of electric components and system sockets is made. If malfunction is not revealed, through 6–8 with a lamp is switched off, and in case of detection of malfunction – remains included or flickers.
Self-testing is spent and during driving, and if necessary the prevention also stands out.

If the key is in the situation "VKL", and the lamp did not join, it is necessary to check a control lamp, a combination of devices and all system. At inclusion of ignition it is necessary to check, whether the lamp as the system does not issue the separate prevention joined.

Conducting and knot of a spiral spring

Conducting transfers energy of the battery in the safety cushion control unit. It provides a food for safety cushion inclusion at collision – for a safety cushion of the driver – through a spiral spring, and for a safety cushion of the passenger – is direct.

Module of a safety cushion of the driver

The module of a safety cushion of the driver is established in a steering wheel. Its design such is that a safety cushion is filled at strong front blow and at once lets out gas not to block the review and not to interfere with driving. The module is not subject to maintenance: if the safety cushion left gas or its repair is required, it is necessary to replace all module assembled. The structure of the module includes the generator, an adjusting plate with a lock ring, pillows and covers of a steering wheel.

The socket with a spiral spring

The socket with a spiral spring is built in the combined switch, providing reliable connection of the module of a safety cushion of the driver to conducting of the car and at the same time, without disturbing turn of a steering wheel when driving. The socket with the spiral spring, built in the combined switch, can be replaced only as a part of uniform assembly.

Generator

The safety cushion module at collision is filled as a result of ignition of firm fuel at which burning gas nitrogen is allocated. The detonator joins an electric current and the amplifier of ignition who, in turn, ignites fuel tablets ignites. The filter with a radiator cools and filters the gaseous nitrogen arriving in safety cushions.

Adjusting plate with a lock ring

The adjusting plate with a lock ring serves for fastening of knot of a safety cushion to the generator and sealing of their connection.

For fastening of a casing and installation of all module on a steering wheel the adjusting bracket serves. These details are components of the module of a safety cushion and are not subject to maintenance.

Cover on a steering wheel

Under a cover there is a safety cushion block. At operation of a pillow there is a rupture of a cover on punching. The cover is the component of SRS system which is not subject to service and repair.

Module of a safety cushion of the passenger

The module of a safety cushion of the forward passenger is established in the dashboard directly over a ware box. Having removed a ware box, it is possible to get access to four fixing bolts of the module of a safety cushion. Having turned out bolts, it is possible to extend the safety cushion module from the dashboard, and then to disconnect from car conducting. The module is not subject to maintenance: if the safety cushion left gas or its repair is required, it is necessary to replace all module assembled.

The module of a safety cushion of the passenger much more the module of a safety cushion of the driver as for protection of the passenger on forward sitting at collision the safety cushion should fill bigger space of salon. Because of this distinction in the sizes the generator of the module of a safety cushion of the passenger more on the size also has a cylindrical form.

Electric system

The system of a safety cushion eats directly from the battery. The system can work at any position of the switch of ignition, including the provisions "VYKL" (OFF) and "ZAPERTO" (LOCK).
The system also can work, if sitting of the driver freely. The electric system carries out three main functions:

– registers collision;
– tests system for determination of its readiness;
– submits a current on a detonator.
The electric system consists from:
– control unit safety cushion;
– diagnostics monitor;
– sensors (blow and safety);
– devices of a reserve food;
– control lamp of a safety cushion;
– conducting and connector knot;
– detonator knot.

Before replacement of components

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Disconnect a wire from the negative plug of the battery and isolate it.
2. Wait for not less than 1 mines that the reserve power supply of the control unit was discharged.

Prevention

The electric chain of operation of system eats directly from the battery. For prevention of spontaneous operation and possible traumas of the personnel before service of system or replacement of any its components the battery should be disconnected and the reserve power supply – is discharged.


3. Disconnect the socket with a spiral spring.

Prohibition of dismantling of components and conducting repair

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Dismantling of components of system of a safety cushion for maintenance is not provided. If the module of diagnostics revealed malfunction of a component, after check of sockets and conducting it is necessary to replace the corresponding component. Do not assort any components.
2. If at check of conductivity chain break is revealed, replace wiring. Do not try to repair conducting.

Work with the safety cushion module

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Do not use an ohmmeter for check of the module of a safety cushion. It can cause spontaneous operation of a safety cushion.
2. Placing the efficient module of a safety cushion on any surface, always put it a cover up to reduce module moving in case of its spontaneous operation.
3. When carrying the efficient module of a safety cushion always direct its cover from itself to prevent traumas in case of its spontaneous operation.
4. Working with the fulfilled module of a safety cushion, put on gloves and goggles as on the fulfilled module of a safety cushion can be caustic rubbed – a by-product of reaction of generation of gas.

The fulfilled safety cushion

For car service in which the safety cushion worked, it is necessary to replace fulfilled safety cushion with the new.

Fulfilled safety cushion should be removed as follows.

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. It is necessary to leave worked safety cushion approximately on 15 mines for cooling as its temperature is very high.
2. Do not allow contact of the fulfilled safety cushion to water.
3. Working with the fulfilled safety cushion, always put on gloves and goggles.
4. It is possible to throw out fulfilled safety cushion as well as any detail which is subject to utilization.
5. Upon termination of work wash up hands water with soft soap.

Prevention

Working with the fulfilled safety cushion, it is necessary to accept precautionary measures. After operation on a surface of a safety cushion can be caustic rubbed – a by-product of reaction of generation of the gas, causing irritation of skin.


 

Malfunction of a safety cushion

If diagnostics revealed malfunction of a safety cushion, it is necessary to replace a faulty safety cushion with the new. Such safety cushion cannot be thrown out simply. It should be returned in KIA motor company for the correct utilization. Do not try to put a safety cushion in action, return it according to the instruction enclosed to a replaceable safety cushion.

Car utilization

In some cars which damaged or have been worn out to such an extent that they are not subject to repair, there can be not worked safety cushions. It can occur at blow behind or sideways, during the capsizing or car operation after resource development. Before utilization of the car of a safety cushion it is necessary to put in action according to the procedure described below.

Remote actuating of a safety cushion

This procedure should be applied to preparation for car utilization with not fulfilled safety cushion, however it is inapplicable for cars in which conducting is damaged or there are no some components of system.


Prevention

Remote actuating of a safety cushion should be made out of a room with the personnel being not closer than 6 m, for safety and because of a loud sound by which safety cushion operation is accompanied.


PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Remove safety cushions from a steering wheel according to the provided instructions.
2. Cut off the socket of a safety cushion and remove isolation from the ends of wires on 25 mm.
3. Connect to wires of the module of a safety cushion two wires in length not less than 6 m.
4. Place safety cushions a cover up on a flat surface in the remote zone: for example, on parking or in the field.

Prevention

Do not place a safety cushion a cover down as force of return at its operation can cause a ricochet and lead to traumas.


5. Remaining at distance not less than 6 m, put safety cushions in action, having connected other ends of wires to the automobile battery with tension of 12 Century.
6. In case of successful actuating the loud sound will be distributed and the pillow material will be visible. Before approaching to a safety cushion wait for 15 mines for its cooling and dispersion of products of combustion.

The safety cushion fulfilled and can be utilized in the usual way.

Removal and installation

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Establish forward wheels in average situation.
2. Removal carry out in the sequence shown in drawing.

Prevention

The electric chain serving for operation of system, eats directly from the battery. For prevention of spontaneous operation and possible traumas of the personnel before service of system or replacement of any its components the battery should be disconnected and the reserve power supply – is discharged.

Disconnect a wire from the negative plug of the battery, isolate and wait for not less than 1 mines that the reserve power supply of the control unit was discharged.


Safety cushion of the driver

Socket shutdown with the double lock


In system of a safety cushion sockets with the double lock are applied.

These sockets are separated as follows.

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Press the orange button and disconnect the orange socket.
2. Press the dark blue button and disconnect the dark blue socket.
3. Connection of sockets is made in sequence, return to separation.

Socket adjustment with a spiral spring

Each time when the steering wheel acts in film, before its repeated installation establish the socket with a spiral spring as follows.

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Establish forward wheels in average situation.
2. Turn the socket with a spiral spring clockwise against the stop.

Prevention

The socket with a spiral spring can be damaged at an excessive inhaling.


3. Turn the socket with a spiral spring counter-clockwise on 2,75 turns.
4. Combine an arrow on a rotary plate of the socket with a spiral spring with an arrow on a socket nest.
5. Establish a steering wheel, having convinced that it is correctly combined with steering shaft.

Prevention

The socket with a spiral spring can be damaged, if the steering wheel is established with shift from average situation.


Check, whether the sound signal works. If the sound signal does not work, remove the module of a safety cushion and check connections of sockets of the module of a safety cushion and the switch of a sound signal.

After maintenance of system be convinced of its serviceability, having executed check by means of a control lamp of system of a safety cushion.

If the system is serviceable, the control lamp joins at ignition inclusion, and then through 4–8 with is switched off.

If the lamp remains included or blinks, once again check safety cushion system.
