17.14. Coolant (R–134A)

GENERAL INFORMATION

Prevention

Knots of systems with R–12 and R–134A are not interchangeable. Do not replace knots from system with R–134A in knots from system with R–12 and on the contrary. Mixing of knots from these two types of systems can lead to refusal of knots and damage of the air conditioner.


Systems with a coolant 134А (R–134A)

For the purpose of an exception of application of coolants-hlorftoruglerodov (HFU) which can destroy an ozone layer of the atmosphere, Kia Motor Corp. introduced on this car the new cooling system demanding use of a coolant not on the basis of HFU. The new coolant is known as R–134a. On many properties, including in a form and the functions, the new type of a coolant is similar R–12.

However R134a is a coolant on a basis гидрофторуглерода (GFU), whereas R–12 – a coolant on the basis of HFU. In view of lack of chlorine in structure of molecules R–134a its application will not damage an ozone layer of the atmosphere.

In the majority of existing cars the air conditioners demanding application R–12 as a coolant are used. In the absence of the special inscriptions designating R–134A, on knots and lines of giving of a coolant of the air conditioner work of system needs coolant R–12.

Kia Motor Corp. started to let out some cars equipped with new air conditioners, demanding application of coolant R–134A. Special demands which will be stated below are made to service of air conditioners with R–134. Coolant R–12 and knots for it can be used only in systems for R–12, and coolant R–134A and knots for it can be used only in systems for R–134a.

Definition of systems with R–134A and R–12

For definition such as the air conditioner established on the concrete car, examine the main knots and pipelines of giving of a coolant of the air conditioner. If on knots of system there will be yellow stickers of "R-134a NON-CFC", it will be system with R–134A, demanding use of coolant V-134a.


Prevention

Air conditioners with R–134a can be distinguished also according to marking plates, and also on the sealing rings of green and brown colors (HNBR) used in system.



If in the air conditioner are available any of the specified signs designating R-134a, in the air conditioner it is possible to apply only coolant R–134a. If the air conditioner is not marked as system with R–134a as it is described earlier, it is system with R–12, demanding use of coolant R–12.
Prevention

Do not add coolant R–12 in the air conditioner demanding application of coolant R–134a.

Never it is necessary to mix two specified such as coolants. It can lead to damage of the air conditioner.


System knots with R–134a

The main knots of air conditioners with R–134a are similar to the knots which were earlier used in systems with R–12. On a design and functions system knots with R–12 and R–134a are similar. Therefore all operations of removal and the installations described for knots with R–12, can be applied and to knots with R–134a.

Precautionary measures

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Liquid coolant R–134a very летуч. Hit of its drop on skin can cause local frostbite. At work with a coolant do not forget to put on a glove.
2. At hit of splashes of a coolant in eyes at once wash out them pure water. For protection of eyes always wear protective or usual glasses.
3. The capacity with R–134a is a vessel under a high pressure.

Never subject to its influence of strong heat and provide its storage at temperature no more 52°С.
4. Often for system check on leakage of a coolant the galoidny detector of leaks is used. At contact to flame R–134a forms poisonous gas phosgene. Always provide sufficient ventilation.
