19.11. Check of the vacuum amplifier of brakes

Check without the measuring device

Stage 1

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. At the switched-off engine several times press a brake pedal.
2. Holding a pedal pressed, start up the engine.
3. If the pedal of a brake moves down at once after engine start-up, it testifies to normal operation of the vacuum amplifier of brakes.

Stage 2

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Start up the engine.
2. In 1–2 minutes stop the engine.
3. Press a brake pedal with usual effort.
4. If the first course of a pedal – a long and second course is shorter, than the first course, it testifies to normal operation of the vacuum amplifier of brakes.
5. Otherwise, check the unilateral vacuum valve or a vacuum hose on absence of damages and check reliability of their fastenings.

Stage 3

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Start up the engine.
2. Press a brake pedal with usual effort.
3. Stop the engine.
4. Slowly press a pedal of a brake and hold it pressed during 30 pages.
5. If the height of a pedal does not change, the vacuum amplifier of brakes works normally.
6. Otherwise, check the unilateral vacuum valve or a vacuum hose on absence of damages and check reliability of their fastenings.

If malfunction still is not eliminated, execute more detailed survey, using a manometer and the vacuum gage.

Check by means of the measuring device

Connect a manometer, a measuring instrument of vacuum and a pressure force measuring instrument on a pedal, as is shown in drawing. After air removal from a manometer carry out the test according to 3 points given below.

Prevention

Use sensors available on sale and a pressure force measuring instrument on a pedal.

а) Check of reduction of vacuum

Not loaded condition

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Start up the engine.
2. Switch off the engine when indications of a measuring instrument of vacuum become equal 500 mm Hg.
3. Watch indications of a measuring instrument of vacuum during 15 pages. If they are in limits of 475-500 mm Hg, the system means is serviceable.

The loaded condition

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Start up the engine.
2. Press a brake pedal with effort of 196 N.
3. Holding a pedal pressed, switch off the engine when indications of a measuring instrument of vacuum will make 500 mm Hg.
4. Watch indications of a measuring instrument of vacuum during 15 pages. If indications of a measuring instrument of vacuum are in limits of 475-500 mm Hg, the system is serviceable.

b) Check of hydraulic pressure

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. If at the switched-off engine (vacuum of 0 mm Hg) pressure of liquid corresponds to the requirements provided below, the system is serviceable.

Force of pressing a pedal Pressure of liquid
196 N 1,177 kPas
2. Start up the engine. Press a brake pedal when indications of a measuring instrument of vacuum will make 500 mm Hg. If pressure of liquid corresponds to the requirements provided below, the system is serviceable.
